UC Berkeley Campanile Glade

Location: University of California Berkeley

Project Type:

Having identified a complex design issue as part of its Landscape Heritage Plan, the University of California Berkeley relied on PGAdesign to find solutions for the multifaceted challenges this space presents.

Campanile Glade, in the classical core of the campus, forms the intersection between four separate areas, three of which represent different architectural periods. The curvilinear picturesque-Olmsted era, the rectilinear Beaux Arts era and the simplified, ornament-free Modern era all converge to create a complex space. PGAdesign developed several design schemes that would respect as well as integrate each period and style. The design also preserves some of the existing trees and ensures ADA-compliant access over the site’s significant grade change.
