The Estuary Bay Front Trail

Location: Oakland

Balancing multiple needs, PGAdesign applied a mix of design strategies to protect homeowners’ privacy while optimizing public access along the estuary. Residents enjoy a colorful and open environment behind a planting buffer. The public design retains a flavor of the past for future appreciation in this evolving neighborhood, using maritime artifacts left by the demolition company that once occupied the site. The developer followed PGAdesign’s suggestion to embed chains, gears and a historic anchor into the surrounding landscape.

PGAdesign coordinated with designers of two adjacent parcels, as well as staff of the Bay Conservation Development Commission (BCDC). The BCDC featured PGAdesign’s plan in its guidelines as an effective example of how to improve public access.
