San Francisco Maritime Museum

Location: San Francisco, CA

Project Type:

Working from historic plans and photographs and a Cultural Landscape Report, PGAdesign developed a plan to recreate the feeling of the Aquatic Park Amphitheater landscape as it appeared in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The design brings back the spare, simple lines and curves of the original pathways and the manicured surfaces of lawns and hedges, which originally complemented the streamlined Moderne style of the building.

Incompatible non-historic elements such as asphalt curbs and wood retaining walls have been removed. Where the historic plantings have not survived, the design calls for visually similar low water-use plants. All areas now have an efficient automatic irrigation system, allowing refurbished lawn and other planting to extend seamlessly over the transition from on-grade to over-structure landscape.
