San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge Toll Building

Location: Oakland

Project Type:

As a subconsultant to HNTB, PGAdesign worked with the team to design the new Bay Bridge Toll Building. As landscape architects, our focus was to compliment the building in forming an initial gateway to the Bay Bridge. We framed the building as viewed from the I-580 approach salt water tolerant poplars.

The site was a hodgepodge of old structures, remnant concrete foundations, and difficult access adjacent to 14 lanes of traffic lined up for the toll booths. PGAdesign added order to the landscape through its planting design, clarified vehicle entry points, provided an elegant ADA ramp access to the new toll building through a marsh plantings designed to mimic the natural adjacent marsh and treat storm water runoff.
