San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge Toll Building

Location: Oakland

Project Type:

As a subconsultant to HNTB, PGAdesign worked with the team to design the new Bay Bridge Toll Building. PGAdesign focused on forming an initial gateway to the Bay Bridge that would complement the building. The design frames the building as viewed from the I-580 approach through saltwater-tolerant poplars.

The site was a hodgepodge of old structures, remnant concrete foundations, and difficult access ways adjacent to 14 lanes of toll booth traffic. PGAdesign introduced order to the landscape through its planting design, clarified vehicle-entry points, and added an elegant ADA ramp access to the new toll building. Marsh plantings were designed to mimic the natural adjacent marsh and treat stormwater runoff.
