San Francisco Maritime Museum
Location: San Francisco, CA
PGAdesign worked from historic plans and photographs and a Cultural Landscape Report to develop a plan recreating the feeling of the Aquatic Park Amphitheater landscape as it appeared in the 1930s and 1940s. The design brings back the spare, simple lines and curves of the original pathways and the manicured surfaces of lawns and hedges that originally complemented the museum’s streamlined modernist building.
Incompatible non-historic elements such as asphalt curbs and wood retaining walls were removed. Where the historic plantings had not survived, the design introduced visually similar low-water-use plants. All areas now have an efficient automatic irrigation system, allowing refurbished lawn and other planting to extend seamlessly over the transition from on-grade to over-structure landscape.
