Lakeside Senior Apartments
Location: Oakland
This affordable-housing project transformed an underused parking lot in Oakland into housing for 92 low-income and special-needs seniors displaced by the Bay Area’s increasing housing costs.
The landscape scheme strengthens the design of the new building by providing multiple alfresco community spaces that engage both the residents and the surrounding community. A welcoming entry includes bike parking and a small plaza integrated with the public sidewalk. The west-facing main courtyard, opening toward the street and visible to pedestrian traffic, connects the senior community to the neighborhood. Other landscape elements include private patios, a community garden, additional community space with a dining area, and discreet street-level biofiltration planters that treat stormwater run-off from the roof. Adding these outdoor amenities and connection points enhances the lives of the residents, providing an accessible and dignified space for living. The project also testifies to the creativity possible when designing within budget constraints and other parameters.
