Elk Trails
Location: Crescent City, CA
Size: 1-mile trail
PGAdesign is designing a one-mile trail populated with wildlife-viewing nodes for the Elk Valley Rancheria, a federally recognized tribe located near Crescent City, California. The trail supports the Rancheria’s mission to build ecotourism on the site where they live and work.
The site is habitat of the Roosevelt elk, one of the largest elk species. Sometimes hundreds of them are grazing at the site at any given time, and PGA’s design integrates a large, covered viewing platform with seating and picnic areas to observe the elk, black bear, bobcats, and coyotes. The viewing structures take reference from the traditional slab house structures built by the Toluwa and Yurok people (the people of the Elk Valley Rancheria are largely comprised of people from the Tolowa and Yurok nations). The design team, working with members of the Rancheria, incorporated references to the traditional structure’s distinctive roofline, traditional materials and orientation, and circular entryway.
