Kirby Cove
Location: Marin County
Partners: Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associate
As part of a five-year contract with the National Park Service (NPS), PGAdesign provided design services to Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates addressing public access at several parks in Marin and San Francisco counties. The objective at each park was to ensure that disabled visitors could find accessible parking, easily navigate the sand dunes, and gain access to picnic facilities, interpretive materials, and restrooms.
The design challenge at Kirby Cove was to provide accessible facilities in an existing campground and trail without compromising the historic fabric. PGAdesign provided three design alternatives and involved stakeholders as they refined them into one design solution that led to final construction documents. The final design provides access to backcountry campsites, restrooms and trails, and day-use facilities. PGAdesign’s design and contract documents complied with all applicable national design standards.
