North Berkeley Library
Location: Berkeley
To expand their library system, the City of Berkeley hired Architectural Resources Group to lead the design team with PGAdesign as landscape architect. The historic North Berkeley Library is located on a small, triangular-shaped site in a residential neighborhood. In addition to the building, the site includes pedestrian circulation and several mature trees on the site. PGAdesign worked closely with the design team to devise a design that would provide access to the expanded footprint of the library while retaining the most important historic landscape features.
PGAdesign had primary responsibility for resolving site access challenges. New seating and an accessible ramp to the building were added to the front and back additions of the library. All the materials were selected for their compatibility with the building and their adherence to sustainable design criteria established by the City.
