Studio One Art Center
Location: Oakland
Founded by the first nonsectarian charity in Oakland, the Ladies’ Relief Society, this historic property continues meeting the needs of today’s community by offering wide-ranging arts programs to the children and adults of Oakland and beyond.
PGAdesign’s design to revitalize the landscape improves the arrival sequence and extends a welcome to the neighborhood. This reception is achieved through including functional art in the exterior spaces, which are united by a circular performance plaza embraced by bands of undulating lawn. The rippling effects in the design, which emanate from the performance space’s center, exemplify the project’s community outreach and the positive impact this institution has on the greater social fabric.
