Studio One Art Center
Location: Oakland
Founded by the first nonsectarian charity in Oakland, the Ladies’ Relief Society, this historic property continues today to meet the needs of the community by offering a broad range of arts programs to the children and adults of Oakland and beyond.
PGAdesign’s design to revitalize the landscape improved the arrival sequence and extends a welcome to the neighborhood. Bringing functional art to the exterior spaces enhances this relationship and unites the spaces through a circular performance plaza embraced by bands of undulating lawn. The center’s community outreach is exemplified by the rippling effects in the design emanating from the center of the performance space, portraying the positive effect this institution has on the greater social fabric.
