West Oakland Reforestation Plan

Location: Oakland

Project Type:

PGAdesign prepared a comprehensive reforestation plan in West Oakland for the community group West Oakland Green Initiatives. The plan included an inventory of parking lots, school yards, medians, and vacant lots.

PGAdesign developed a list of tree species that was both suitable for the area and that provided environmental benefits. The selections were based on a tree’s ability to improve air quality, abate stormwater runoff, and provide cooling shade. Considerations included drought and cold tolerance, structural integrity, susceptibility to pests and diseases, maintenance needs, and longevity.

After West Oakland Green Initiatives identified an area for a pilot planting project of 300 trees, PGAdesign surveyed each block and marked appropriate locations. PGAdesign selected species for 13 arterial streets, and prepared the necessary contract documents for bidding the work.

As a result of this plan, the City of Oakland revised and expanded their Master Street Tree recommendations to include species identified in the plan.
