Ong&Ong Plaza

As part of efforts by the University of California, Berkeley, to draw more visitors to the campus, the University replaced an existing cafe with a new restaurant serving healthy food in a sophisticated atmosphere. The addition of the restaurant on the west side of Wurster Hall, home to the College of Environmental Design, also occasioned renovation of its outdoor plaza to provide gathering space for the College and al fresco dining for the restaurant. The new space is now known as Ong&Ong Plaza.
Materials were chosen to accord with Wurster Hall’s concrete structure. New pavers, a ramped entry, and built-in benches provide improved access to the building while highlighting the site’s mature coast live oaks. New lighting illuminates the plaza at night, and an outdoor barbecue pit augments the restaurant’s culinary capabilities. The redesign also provides a much-needed ADA-compliant access to Bancroft Avenue, creating a new gateway to the campus.
