Uptown Oakland

The City of Oakland charged PGAdesign with designing streetscape, housing, and park improvements as part of a master plan to revive the Uptown neighborhood as an entertainment district.
Refining an earlier plan prepared by an urban design firm, PGAdesign developed verdant corridors for pedestrian and vehicular access to unify themed courtyards for new residential and retail space. A monumental sculpture centers Fox Square Park, a custom-designed stamped asphalt pattern coordinates with architectural features, water features provide soothing sounds, and courtyards offer tables, fire pits, and other amenities conducive to gathering. The streetscape facilitates a safe pedestrian experience within a dense, mixed-use urban setting.
Developed by a private-public partnership, the 655 market-rate residential units are transit-oriented, providing less than one parking spot per unit with the expectation that residents will rely on nearby bus and BART lines.
