Union Point Park
Location: Oakland
Partners: Grupo de Diseño Urbano
PGAdesign collaborated with Grupo de Diseño Urbano to transform a contaminated nine-acre industrial site into a major civic asset with bay access, panoramic views, picnic and recreational facilities, public art, and a performance space.
The formerly flat and barren site now contains elevated berm gardens, extensive plantings, and an overlook hill that serves as a focal point and tells a modern environmental story: rather than removing contaminated soil and dumping it in someone else’s backyard, it was gathered into a mound, capped, and rendered benign with sophisticated sustainability measures. PGAdesign successfully guided the project through environmental permitting.
