Casa de la Misión
Location: San Francisco Mission District
Partners: Mercy Housing
Breaking ground in 2020, the five-story Casa de la Misión brings 45 affordable senior housing apartments, along with community and meeting space, to the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood. The project was sponsored by Mission Neighborhood Centers, which provides services to marginalized youth, and by non-profit affordable housing developer Mercy Housing. PGAdesign designed the landscape for 1,535 square feet of open space—a ground floor courtyard and a roof garden—and streetscape improvements. Red maples bring shade and color to 24th Street. Biofiltration planters and permeable pavers treat stormwater runoff from the new construction. Climate-adapted, low-water-use plants include vines, ferns, succulents, grass-like rushes, and shrubs that flower and reflect the seasons throughout the year.
