Hacienda Heights
Location: Richmond, CA
Partners: Mercy Housing, the Community Housing Development Corporation, and the City of Richmond
This 1960s-era midrise housing development needed a comprehensive renovation when Mercy Housing asked PGAdesign to work with them to renew the project’s landscape. Both landscape amenities and security needed improvement. The non-profit developer asked for a range of design alternatives from minimal to comprehensive rehabilitation. PGAdesign developed these alternatives and completed the design development and contract documents for the preferred alternative. An RFQ was issued for artists to reinvigorate the building and nearby area. The selected installation was integrated into the fence leading from the main street to the front door of the project.
After a hiatus brought on by the global financial crisis, the project owner renewed their zeal for implementing this affordable housing. PGAdesign’s plan provides an inviting entry plaza, a trellis-covered cooking and dining space, a community garden, and a range of different seating and gathering areas.
