BART Seismic Renovation
Location: Portions of three light rail lines from Orinda to Concord, Oakland to Richmond, and Colma to Millbrae
This complex BART project renovated seven miles of landscape disturbed by the seismic retrofitting of approximately 1500 aerial piers and abutments comprising the aerial railway segments along the C, R, and M BART lines. Spanning 10 cities, the project realigned and widened much of Ohlone Greenway, making it wider and street crossings safer.
While conducting extensive field work and coordinating quality control among two large consultant teams, PGAdesign verified existing landscape elements from non-BFS or CADD (standards) documents, and produced drawings that passed exacting standards and review processes.
PGAdesign worked with the various city governments, creating graphic displays and sketches to illustrate additional design elements requested by the cities. PGAdesign’s landscape architects met the need for in-kind plant replacements with innovative, sustainable plantings that are low maintenance yet appealing.
In Oakland, for example, PGAdesign proposed replacing an irrigated lawn with ornamental grasses and other drought-tolerant species sustained by a durable and efficient bubbler irrigation system. Sheet mulch controls weeds and retains soil moisture. The bubblers also irrigate a variety of native California shrubs, replacing several hundred yards of ice plant along the Millbrae line.
